With more than 20 years in the fashion industry, designer Vo Viet Chung never ceases to create beautiful outfits that combine Vietnam’s folklore and tradition with a sense of modernity. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Heritage Fashion, Vo Viet Chung has dedicated a special collection to the magazine and its readers.
The “Dang ngoai – Dang trong” (North and South) collection is inspired by the distinguished beauty of Northern and Southern women in the old days. The collection includes “ao ngu than” (five-panel tunic), an early design revolution of Southern people. Vo Viet Chung has expressed the meaning of the five-panel tunic through his own áo dài designs with inner and outer layers of tunics, accompanied by turbans, hairpins and earrings. His designs display a royal style through patterns of sacred animals, lotus blossoms and clouds, which evoke the outfits worn by nobility.
The collection also takes inspiration from the “Le Mur” fashion of the North that drastically revolutionized the four-panel tunic and turned it into the áo dài of present day with just front and back panels. Ankle-length panels highlight graceful steps while the form-fitting upper part of the áo dài enhances the charm of the wearer.
In this collection, Vo Viet Chung has used from all three major regions in Vietnam, including Lanh My A silk, Mac Nua (an ebony-colored fruit used to dye the silk), Ha Dong silk, Da Nang silk, as well as the finest fabrics from nearby countries including Shanghai brocade, Japan’s Chirimen silk, India’s Sari silk, and Cambodia’s silk. Each design is accompanied by meticulously crafted accessories, such as jewelry, capes, turbans and flower pins.
